Youth Aikido Class: Basic

Students aged 6-15 who are new to Aikido are asked to spend a few months attending the Youth Basic Class. This class will teach them basic techniques, safe falling and other skills necessary to practice Aikido. After a period of time as determined by the instructors*, students will then be invited to attend Youth Mixed Rank class in addition to continuing in the Beginners class.

In our Youth Program students are taught traditional Aikido techniques adjusted for their maturity level. Among the traditional aspects of our curriculum are:

  • Posture & Breathing
  • Warm-up Exercises
  • Body Movement and Coordination Exercises
  • Tumbling and Safe Falling Skills
  • Strikes (for use in practicing defensive techniques)
  • Basic Self-Defense Techniques

Additionally, the ideals of the Samurai are woven into class discussions and practice as part of each student's understanding of Aikido. These ideals include: Service To the Community, Honesty and Integrity, Fairness, and Compassion for others.

Students over 15 are encouragd to participate in the adult Introductory and Basic programs.

*Please note, younger students (aged 6-9) may wind up waiting a longer period of time before being invited into the Youth Mixed Rank class. This is a matter of assuring both their safety and an appropriate maturity level for the techniques taught in that class. If you have questions, please contact the dojo.
